Nikon Coolpix A900: Review with samples

Hey everyone! So it’s finally time to start testing other cameras aside from that found in smartphones. In this video I will be doing review of Nikon compact style super zoom camera called Coolpix A900. It has comibination of 1/2.3 inch 20 megapixel sensor with F./3.4-6.9 aperture 35x optical zoom lens it also shoots 4k video at maximum of 30 fps and 1080p up to 60 fps This camera is supposed to be very small while offering great versatility and powerful zoom. However nothing is for free and I will show you what I mean by that later in this review. Now let’s take a closer look at the camera: it’s features and performance. I will start with size, build quality and design Camera is very small considering what is capable of. Holding this device in one hand or fitting into the pocket is really easy. In terms of design I really like look of this camera It looks classical and a bit old school; especially in this silver color. Body looks like metal but don’t be fooled It’s plastic… Anyway that’s not a big deal considering its entry-level super zoom camera. Other than that build quality is absolutely OK. All buttons and dials are precisely made and looking to solid dials on the top and shutter button is actually made of metal every Motion and feel of them are without any objections. As you can see screen is articulating so that’s great news for any vloggers and people shooting in poorly accessible places when you need to reach out a bit Camera is very easy to use. UI is very minimalistic especially settings. Nikon did awesome improvement in this aspect. People not very familiar with tech shouldn’t have much problems but that not mean all the functions were cut out You still got P,A,S,M modes on the dial and extra section when you enter these modes in the settings so you can play with exposure shutter speed, white balance and ISO without any problem. As far as image quality goes for average consumer It should be absolutely okay But don’t expect performance like in entry-level DSLR or even cameras in flagship smartphone in some aspects like in the Samsung Galaxy S8, and in the fact I’m not really mad at this because doing such powerful zoom in camera this small for such a price with quality of a DSLR is just not possible at the moment Autofocus is better than I expected from my previous Nikon superzoom (Coolpix P600) but not as good as some more advanced systems: for example contrast and phase detect AF Still it gets job done even at the zoom. Sharpness and level of detail is good But you cannot really go into the crop appreciating that detail level There is some noise and flatness typical for smaller sensor when you zoom a picture a little bit. Dynamic range is okay but there are some small problems with landscape images – when the sun is shining nearby area gets blown out low-light performance is not super strong point of this camera In artificial lightning colors are a little bit washed out and most of the time camera wants to lower shutter speed and use its optical image stabilization to shoot something at night results are mixed. It depends how steady you hold the camera Overall pictures in daytime are sharp with vibrant, pretty accurate color tone. Image quality in zoom is also good but at the maximum of 840mm (35 mm equivalent) performance is noticeably worse; you have to remember that this lens isn’t very bright f./6.9 aperture at the max zoom so you should hold camera steady and show a concern about good light when you shoot. If you do that results will be very nice to look at. In terms of video recording zooming is pretty fast in photo mode Unfortunately when you record the video it’s much slower Stabilization in 4k is not very well functioning because in this resolution you cannot turn Hybrid stabilization function on, video gets pretty shaky Movies are kind of digitally oversharpened, colors are a bit more on the saturated side rather than flat and neutral When it comes to exposure most of the time it’s okay but it’s nothing to write home about and it has same problems found in iPhone 7 which is this weird exposure lucky when you switch from bright to dark object. Video quality could be a little bit better like in the best flagship smartphones but it should be completely satisfying for an average consumer. Not many cameras in this segment offer 4K video recording. To sum up such lens gives you real fun You can shoot photos of things that are not reached by a normal camera And I cannot say that picture quality of Nikon Coolpix A900 is bad when it comes to this segment because from what I’ve seen competition isn’t better in any aspect They are all small size sensor camera and all of them will have exactly the same problems with image or video quality described in this review. What I can question is buying camera in this segment because if you are looking strictly for picture or video quality there are many other far better options in the same price: for example entry-level DSLR like Nikon d3300 with its big 24 megapixel APS-C sized sensor with 18-55 mm lens. If you want a super zoom in the same price you can also buy Nikon Coolpix B700 with its 60x optical zoom or something as crazy as Coolpix P900 with 83x zoom. Picture and video quality will be similar but camera will reach even more things although it will be bigger. That said buying this camera is brilliant idea if you need that compact size super zoom and by no mean quality from this little guy is bad, but personally I would choose DSLR or Nikon Coolpix B700 over A900 any day because you get more things for the price and this pocket fitting size is not a deal breaker for me. Most of the time I have my phone with me to shoot something on the go and camera is something additional that I carry on intentionally. So it all depends what you need. That’s all. 1. Great review. You show actual examples of what you like and don't like, excellent. Most reviewers are just talking heads and you don't know if they are accurate or not. The close up video is so useful it is as if I am holding the A900 in my hands while watching this on my tablet. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.

  2. does anyone know how the a900 works on concerts? can you imagine that it makes nice shots, which are sharp and not blurred?

  3. But phone pictures (all of them suck) and the awhile idea is not to lug bulky cameras such as d3400. Most people want small especially when traveling, going outside etc. Thus smaller wins any day even though you get more for less $ with bulky cameras but those are just not fun to carry.

  4. I am still not sure B700 or A900. I travel alot and i'm not sure if I should get the a900 because it is alot smaller and easier to get out on the go. What do you reckon?
Do you guys think the B700 is a bit to big to vlog with and carry around?

  5. I appreciate the review but I still can't decide whether I should buy this or entry level DSLR. But your review was very good thankyou

  6. Thank you! Great review. I do wish you had shown me how easily it fits into a pocket… that's the convenience I'm wanting in a little point n shoot! Thank you again.
