Hiphop Tamizha – #Tamizhi | Episode 6 | Evolution of Tamizhi

The ancient script of Tamizh
language has been Graffiti and… … Tamizhi also know as Tamizh
Brahmi came into existence later Looking at the transformation of Tamizhi script
from ancient to it’s present day format… we witness a history
of 2000 years… and several important historical
events that contributes to it Come, let’s continue this journey Tamizhi The history might divide us
by religion, caste and race But Tamizh has never
paved for any division You are our heart, mind
and soul; hail Tamizhi! The fire that lights up
our creativity;Tamizhi When we started using palm
leaves for writing… It must’ve initiated the change in the shape
of Tamizhi script, according to few scholars They use nail-stylus swiftly
to write in the palm leaves While writing with the
nail-stylus, the letters… that were supposed to be
straight tend to bend a little (Amman Kovilpatti, Salem) The habit of writing in palm leaves
has been prevalent in Tamizh Nadu The letters have taken a circular form
wherever there was usage of palm leaves Not only in Tamizh Nadu, but
also in Andhra, Odisha… and even till Burma the change of circular
shape in letters happened says Caldwell He says it in his book ‘Comparative
grammar of Dravidian languages’ While writing on plam leaves, the force applied
on it using nail-stylus might pierce it Hence, the nail-stylus is bent and is used
to write with the support of finger nails. This is one of the important reasons behind
circular transformation of Brahmi letters The letters that took a circular
form after 2nd century AD… … are called Vatteluttu script
(Circular letters) by the scholars. Actually, we didn’t name those
letters as Vatteluttu script The name was coined during the
period of Raja Raja Chozhan The information is evident from
the inscriptions in Courtallam A literature from 7th Century AD
mentions the Courtallam temple The literature was written
by Gnanasambandar When the temple collapsed… it was rebuilt during
Raja Raja Chozhan’s reign The inscriptions in the
temple are copied back then As they are in Vatteluttu script, only very
few people were able to read it back then The king ordered to rewrite the
inscriptions in new Tamizh script It is said in those inscriptions… “When the temple was reconstructed…” “since the inscriptions
are in Vatteluttu script…” “they are preserved
back in new Tamizh script” As the letters started to
take the circular form… the reign of Pallavas
began in Tamizh Nadu The arrival of Pallavas, who were
using the northern languages… had a strong influence on the
script, that was in use here The Pallavas conquered
Kanchi during 300 AD (3rd Century BC) (2nd Century AD) (2nd Century AD –>3rd Century AD) ) The Pallavas captured the Thondai
Naadu i.e. the northen part of Tamizh Nadu The region is then called
the Pallava Kingdom While studying their
earlier ruling times… their administrative language and
their administrative script were… The administrative
language was Prakrit Their administrative
script was Andhra Brahmi They call it the Southern
brahmi and not Tamizh Brahmi The people of Tamizh Nadu were
using Tamizh Language and… Vatteluttu script that were
transformed from Tamizh Brahmi The Pallavas who came to power
after capturing the Tamizh land… used Prakrit and Southern Brahmi that
was transformed from Asokan Brahmi At that time… people were anxious if Pallavas will accept
Tamizh as their administrative language… or will they declare Prakrit
as the official language They declared Prakrit as their
administrative language It is evident from copper plate and other
stone inscriptions from the Pallava period (Sivas Kandhavarman’s Maithavelu copper plate
Prakrit language, 3rd Century AD) Pallavas declared Prakrit as
their administrative language When they tried to communicate
the kingdom’s official orders… using the Vatteluttu script, which
is in use among the common people They found that there were no Gutturals
(Varga ezhuthukkal) in Vatteluttu script Prakrit cannot be written
without the use of Gutturals Pallavas, who declared Prakrit as official
language, found this situation to be complicated They created a new
script to solve this They called it Grantha
which means script We call it Pallava Grantha Pallava Grantha can be found in many
inscriptions from the Pallava period (Grantha script) The Pallave Grantha was declared as
their new administrative script Parts of Tamizh Nadu that
are ruled by Pallavas… had the administrative language as Prakrit
and the administrative script as Grantha But ancient Tamizh people kept using
Tamizh language and Vatteluttu script The proof: Memorial stones
from the Pallava period (Irulapatti memorial stone, 480 AD) Although most of the official inscriptions were
written in Prakrit during Pallava reign… the memorial stone, which was an important
cultural etiquette of the people then… indicate that, only Vatteluttu script
and Tamizh language was used by them The people used the
Vatteluttu script They mention the reign of Pallavas on inscriptions
but still they used Vatteluttu script The administrative language
of Pallavas was Prakrit The administrative script was Grantha,
which was developed from southern Brahmi An important change to
notice here is that… since 300 AD, Pallavas slowly started
transforming into Tamizhans After that they had no relationship
with the Andhra region Because new rulers
conquered those regions The Thondai region has
become the Pallava region As the Pallavas slowly
transformed into Tamizhans… Around 5th or 6th century AD, they accepted
Tamizh as their administrative language The tenacity of the people
in not accepting Prakrit… and using Tamizh language
without budging… after a few centuries,
forced the Pallavas to… accept Tamizh language as
their administrative language Instead of Grantha that was the
administrative script for long… they started using the old
Vatteluttu script again But the impact of Grantha , that
was used for few centuries… brought about a change in
those Vatteluttu script (Grantha influenced new Tamizh script) The new script with the
Grantha’s influence… Grantha that was developed
from Southern Brahmi They introduced new Tamizh script
with Grantha’s influence on it The inscriptions released
are in Tamizh language… with very minimal influence
of the northern language But we can find a bit
of Telugu’s influence For example in Vallam, the rock cut
temple made by Mahendra Varman… they mention the name of a
Pallava princess as ‘Kommai’ (Kommai) ‘Kommai’ is the Telugu equivalent
of the Tamizh word ‘Kumari’ So, with the bit of Telugu’s influence… they shaped up a new
script for Tamizh language And that is the script that we are
using as the modern day Tamizh Slowly the Vatteluttu
script became extinct After the Narasimhavarman’s era, a
new Tamizh script was introduced Up until 8th century AD, the Vatteluttu
script in the Pallava region… were transformed to new Tamizh script with bit
of influences of Grantha and Southern Brahmi Whereas, the Chera and Pandia
region were ruled by Tamizh kings… and the Vatteluttu script did not
have any influence and was intact At that time, there was a major political change
over in Tamizh Nadu in the 8th century AD The diminishing Pallava
empire was defeated… and the reign was taken
over by the Chozhas (9th Century AD) People under this new Chozha empire… continued to use the new Tamizh
script that was introduced by Pallavas The Chozha kings, who re-established
their kingdom after centuries… started expanding their kingdom and defeated
the Pandias and Cheras by 10th Century AD… there by establishing a
very vast Chozha Empire During their era, they encountered a new
problem concerned to the administrative script During the 9th Century AD… after the Chozha empire
was established… the entire Tamizh Nadu, every part
of it comes under single Chozha king They needed an official
language and an official script Some call it administrative
language and administrative script The king was supposed to decide whether to
impart new Tamizh script from north to south… or to impart the Vatteluttu script
from the south to the north… They decided to take new Tamizh script that
had the influences of Pallava Grantha … and imposed the same to
the southern Tamizh Nadu But they didn’t do that in Kerala The Vatteluttu script
remained the same And it continues to be the
same in Kerala even today Although the two partitions in Tamizh
Nadu consists of people speaking Tamizh… since the script of
the both land differed… they could not understand the
script given by the Tamizh people Likewise Tamizh people found it difficult
to read their messages in Vatteluttu script So, because of the difference in script,
people distanced themselves slowly and the land later formed
as the Kerala state Had Raja Rajan imposed the
Tamizh script there too… then just like the older Tamizh Nadu,
Kerala would have still been a part of it This shows that a script has
the power to join regions… … or even separate them Thus, after 10th Century AD… The new Tamizh letters came into
existence in the entire Tamizh Nadu The Vatteluttu script went extinct And so, this is how Tamizhi
also known as Tamizh Brahmi… transformed to Vatteluttu script… and later, got influenced
by Pallava Grantha … and became the new Tamizh
script that is in use today There should not be any
confusion in Tamizh script The necessity to avoid any confusion
in Tamizh script arose back then Understanding these needs, the
changes were made accordingly… by Tholkappiar Tamil script can now
be read properly

  31. This video requires more research since all the Pallavas, Pandiyas, cheras and Cholas has predominantly varman in names. Varmam is tamil martial arts and all are from same Lineage. People who mastered this martial arts may have been called Varman and this martial might have helped to rule also. This video is deciding just based on written scripts.
